SoundCraft: a free, open-source Pro Tools alternative

SoundCraft is the digital audio workstation of the Crafting Apps: an open-source, clean-room take on Avid Pro Tools. It has Edit and Mix windows, ten inserts and sends per track, busses, VCAs, automation, a piano-roll MIDI editor with built-in synths, CLAP/VST3/AU plugin hosting, surround up to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics, and a score editor.

The online version is the official web build from the v0.6.1 release (2026-10-12). It runs locally in your browser; a desktop browser with WebGPU or WebGL2 works best.

What SoundCraft can do

Edit window

Shuffle, Slip, Spot and Grid modes, Smart, Trim and Grabber tools, playlists with comping lanes and five crossfade shapes.

Mix window

Ten inserts and ten sends per track, busses, aux inputs, master faders, VCAs, routing folders and solo-in-place.

Automation

Volume, pan, mute, sends and every plugin parameter, written live in Write, Touch, Latch and Trim.

MIDI and instruments

A piano roll with a velocity lane, step input, quantize, a subtractive synth, a drum synth and a sampler.

Your plugins

Host CLAP, VST3 and Audio Units with their own editors (desktop builds).

Surround and video

Stereo to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics, plus a picture track that decodes H.264 and ProRes.

How to download and install SoundCraft

Open the official SoundCraft GitHub releases or getartcraft.com/apps/soundcraft.
Windows: run soundcraft-0.6.1-windows-x64.msi (or the portable zip; ARM64 and x86 builds exist).
macOS: open soundcraft-0.6.1-macos-universal.dmg, which is signed and notarized for Apple Silicon and Intel.
Linux: use the AppImage, or the .deb, .rpm or Flatpak for your distro.
Optionally verify the file against SHA256SUMS.txt in the same release.

Does SoundCraft support VST plugins?

The desktop builds host CLAP, VST3 and Audio Units. The browser version uses the built-in plugins.

Is SoundCraft free?

Yes. SoundCraft is free and open source under MIT OR Apache-2.0. There is no subscription, no account and no telemetry.

Can I use SoundCraft online?

Yes. SoundCraft compiles to WebAssembly, and this site hosts the official v0.6.1 web build at artcraftsuite.org/app/soundcraft/. It runs entirely in your browser, and files you open are not uploaded.

Where can I download SoundCraft safely?

Only from getartcraft.com/apps/soundcraft or the Releases page of github.com/storytold/soundcraft. Avoid look-alike GitHub repos that offer a "local zip" or password-protected archive: they are not the official project.

Does SoundCraft run on Windows, Mac and Linux?

Yes. Releases include Windows installers and portable zips (x64, x86, ARM64), a universal macOS DMG, Linux AppImage, deb, rpm and Flatpak (x86_64 and aarch64), FreeBSD builds and the web version.
